One day soon after Barney left, I was in a department store with my then-boyfriend, Joe, when I noticed a man at one of the checkout lines. What he was checking out was me.

I was about eighteen at the time, and it would have been hard to miss me. I had grown to my full height of five feet ten inches, and I looked like a Barbie doll come to life: big boobs, narrow waist, long blonde hair. The way I looked wasn’t any kind of invitation—it was just the way I looked. But I couldn’t escape it, and I had grown accustomed to getting the once-over from guys, the “hey-baby” stare, sometimes wolf whistles and crude comments. I didn’t mind the attention, and I could always handle myself.

But this man really creeped me out. For one thing, he was clearly much older. For another, he was so cocksure, sweeping me up and down with his eyes, grinning all the while.

I returned the stare with one of my own, a dirty look that said, “Who do you think you are, jerk?”

That’s when I felt it—a jolt of recognition. I whirled around, grabbed on to Joe’s arm, and dragged him toward the exit, muttering, “Get me outta here…”

“What’s the matter, Laurie?” Joe asked, out in the parking lot. “Did you know that man?”

“Unfortunately, yes, I know him. Joe, that was my father.”
