Next morning
WHEN Peter and Janet woke up the next morning they each remembered about Tolly, and how he had bought old Brownie. Jane lay and thought about it for a little while, and then she slipped out of her room, and ran to wake Peter.
He was so sound asleep that it was hard to wake him. She shook him and pummelled him, but he just gave little grunts and turned away.
‘Peter! You know you’re not as deeply asleep as all that!’ said Janet, crossly. ‘All right. I’ve a pin here and I’ll just see if that will wake you.’
Peter sat up immediately! He was cross and frowning. ‘What’s the matter? Don’t you dare to stick that pin into me, you horrible girl. It must be awfully early in the morning. What’s the matter?’
‘It isn’t early. It’s only ten minutes to breakfast time,’ said Janet. ‘Do get up. I want to be down early to breakfast, and to talk to you about calling a meeting of the Secret Seven. We MUST let the others know about Tolly and Brownie and Codger. We’ve done everything on our own so far, and we oughtn’t to do any more without at least tell ing them!’
‘All right. Call a meeting then. I’m going to sleep again,’ said Peter, snuggling down under the bedclothes once more.
‘You really are a stupid, silly sleepyhead!’ said Janet, crossly. She got off the bed. ‘All right, I’ll take you at your word. Go to sleep all the morning if you want to. I’m going to call a Secret Seven meeting myself, see. I’ll go round IMMEDIATELY after breakfast and warn everyone. I’ll tell them you’re not feeling too good, and that I’ll take the meeting, and be its head, instead of you.’
‘You will NOT!’ said Peter, fiercely. He flung off the bed-clothes so violently that they fell all over Janet and she was nearly smothered. ‘Go away, you horrid girl. I’ll turn you out of the Secret Seven if you go on like this!’
Janet gave a chuckle and went off to her own room. Ah now — now they would be sure to have a Secret Seven meeting. How she loved them! There was quite a lot to report too. ‘I’ll take some of the chocolates that Auntie gave me last time she was here. And I’ll ask Cook for some of the ginger cake she made two days ago. It was an enormous one — there must surely be lots left! There’s such heaps to talk about we’ll need something to eat. We’ll talk about Tolly — and Brownie — and how Daddy bought Brownie for ten pounds, and that half Brownie is ours — and Tolly is sleeping in the stable with Brownie and our other horses . . .’
There was still quite a while before breakfast and Janet scribbled as many Secret Seven notices as she could.
‘IMPORTANT: A Secret Seven Meeting will be held in our shed at ten o’clock sharp, to report further proceedings on the complaint that Bob Smith made at our last meeting.
