The Petrine Legacy

As much as any other figure, Peter is associated with the foundations of Christianity. He is the leader and spokesman of Jesus’s disciples in all the canonical Gospels and part of the “inner circle” with the brothers James and John. Peter along with John and James the brother of Jesus were the “pillars” of the church in Jerusalem during the early days (Gal. 1:18–19; 2:9), and Luke-Acts makes Peter the hero of the first third of Acts. Paul further cites oral traditions that may come directly from him (1 Cor. 15:5) and calls him the “apostle” (or missionary) to the circumcised (Gal. 2:7–8). According to legend, after leaving Jerusalem in the 40s Peter traveled through Asia Minor and eventually to Rome, where he was martyred under the emperor Nero after the great fire of 64. These legends, however, come from later developments in the Petrine tradition, including the production of an extensive apocryphal literature in his name (to be discussed in Chapters 12 and 15). Two letters in the New Testament are attributed to Peter. The style, theology, and situation of the two letters are quite different, and they have for a long time been recognized to be from different authors. As a result, 2 Peter will be discussed in Chapter 16, while 1 Peter will be discussed here.
