Response to Peter Kreeft

Peter Kreeft’s response is mostly appreciative, and I am glad to see a philosopher of his stature reflecting on (and excited by) biblical theology (especially temple theology). There is a significant movement today of analytic philosophers and theologians grappling with how a careful reading of the Bible in its own context can inform their conceptual reflections. This is, of course, a two-way street, since such reflections can help to unpack and further clarify theological concepts that are intrinsic to Scripture.2

Kreeft raises an important issue, which he would like me to have explored in more depth, namely, the extent of continuity and discontinuity between the present creation and the eschatological world that we are awaiting. Along those lines, he asks all sorts of fascinating questions, including whether matter will any longer be subject to entropy, how marriage will be transformed, etc. I agree with Kreeft that “one need not have or expect to have answers to such questions in order to ask and ponder them with profundity and profit.”3

In conclusion, let me offer my thanks to Mike Wittmer for his generous invitation for me to contribute to this four-views Counterpoints volume. It has been an honor to dialogue with fellow Christian theologians about the nature of eschatological hope. Even if we do not agree on all points, I look forward to continuing the discussion—and getting to know my interlocutors better—in the eschaton.
