Grasses growing on the forest floor in Montana after a fire in 1988. Many trees are still charred from the flames.
Adapting to fire
Some plants are well adapted to survive the heat of forest fires. For example, the giant sequoia has tough, thick bark, deep roots, and branches that are out of reach of surface fires. The aspen can grow new shoots from any of its roots that remain undamaged. Some plants even take advantage of fire to reproduce. Some plant seeds lie dormant in the soil, perhaps for many decades, until the heat of a fire opens them up.
