MITCHEL

Grateful his talk was finally over and had gone well, Mitchel took a seat to listen to the others. Especially Sinclair, who did splendidly. He had the crowd in the palm of his elegant hand, reciting relevant statistics and percentages Mitchel could never hope to memorize. Mitchel hadn’t known Sinclair was such an excellent speaker, but he realized he shouldn’t have been surprised. Sinclair lectured to students on a variety of subjects every day. The practice had clearly paid off. He’d managed to slip in a few jokes about living with wolves and barking at the mailman that the weres actually laughed at.

When the presentations finished, the crowd delivered a standing ovation for all the speakers. The formalities of the convention concluded, and the celebratory banquet dinner commenced.

The Vampire Council spared no expense. The assortment of foods and drinks available was astounding: broiled beasts for the carnivores, sweet delicate sugary confections for the fairies, synthetic flavored bloods for the vampires. Something for everyone, and everyone had something; a grand party indeed.

The crowded venue overflowed with partygoers. Mitchel tried all evening, in between plates of roast beef, green beans, and mashed cauliflower, to track down Sinclair, but he couldn’t turn around without someone seeking his attention. All of the night’s speakers found themselves in high demand. He spotted Sinclair several times throughout the evening, and his space was constantly swarming with admirers.

Once, he managed to catch his eye, and Sinclair had winked at him. Mitchel winked back and then was promptly prodded to speak with a group of witches who had questions about Borson. He fielded their inquiries to the best of his abilities, always eager to present his university in a positive light. Borson had no coven of witches, and they would make a fine addition, particularly if they were willing to teach.

Mitchel enjoyed chatting with all kinds of supernaturals that evening and he relished the good mood everyone seemed to be in, but he was dying to get Sinclair alone, tell him what a good job he’d done, get a closer look at him in that designer suit he wore. Mitchel wanted to be the one monopolizing Sinclair’s time for a while. He didn’t get his chance until the night was nearly over. Finally the party began to wind down, and Sinclair who sought him out at last.

“Hey there, stranger,” Sinclair said with a tired smile.

Mitchel wanted to throw his arms around him and give him a kiss, but they’d not discussed what sort of behavior was acceptable in public, so he settled for a quick, friendly embrace.

“Hey, Sinclair, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to find you earlier. I tried to.”

“I know, I feel the same way. I searched for you too. I cannot believe how many people were here! They must have set a new record for attendance at this theater, don’t you think?”

“For sure. It was impressive. I feel really good about how things went.” Mitchel smiled down at him. “You were brilliant.”

Sinclair’s cheeks took on that pretty shade of pink Mitchel was becoming hooked on.
