BEN DROVE TALIA’S MINIVAN to the semi-circular drive in front of the house. He’d ring the doorbell like a proper date. Talia deserved that. He lived in the apartment over her garage for over two weeks and spent time in the house. Yet, when he rang the doorbell, his palms were as sweaty as a high schooler on a first date. What was up with that?

Talia opened the door. Wow. She wore the same flattering blouse with a flowing skirt that met her calf-high boots. Her hair flowed over her shoulders and the sweet scent of her perfume, or maybe her shampoo, wafted toward him. The soft loveliness of her femininity slammed his senses.

“You look great.”

“You look all right yourself.” She gave him a little smile before grabbing her coat from the coat tree.

He held the car door for her as she ducked into the passenger side. Talia slid in, wearing a grateful smile.

A while later they turned left into the parking lot of a restaurant with a green awning.

“Ciao Amici’s. Who told you I like Italian? I’ve always wanted to try this place.” Her comment and sweet smile pleased Ben.

He grinned. “I called Gil. I thought he might recommend a good place to go.” Too bad he was leaving soon. He could get used to this.

He opened Talia’s door for her, not wanting to take his eyes off her when she beamed up at him. Contentment welled up in him at the thought of making Talia happy. Why did he possess the overwhelming desire to help and protect her more than he had any other woman? She seemed quite capable on her own.

“I might be an independent woman, but I don’t mind when a man opens a door for me. Gentleman are few and far between.” She tilted her head a bit and gave him a playful smirk. “In fact, I think we could use a little more chivalry these days. Aunt Violet thought it was dead.” Now it seemed she was reading his mind. Was he so transparent?

“There are a few of us knights-in-shining-armor left.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“Uh-huh, right.”

He entered the restaurant behind her. The aromas of garlic, cheese, perhaps the scent of wine filled the place. Everything one would expect in an Italian restaurant teased his appetite.

They were seated in a rounded booth with a high back. In the candlelight her hair took on a fiery glow, and her eyes warmed to a golden amber. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been out for a nice dinner like this, or on a date for that matter.” Setting the menu down, she met his gaze. “I don’t even know why I told you that. It’s not something a girl usually advertises.”

He rubbed his chin, pretending to think. “I have a feeling you’ve been too busy caring for other people to have much of a social life.”

The waitress interrupted them. “Are you ready to order?”

Talia ordered a pasta dish and a cup of minestrone. He did the same.
