Machine stitches

You can use a sewing machine to sew all sorts of practical or decorative stitches:

Straight stitch

All sewing machines will sew straight stitch, and it is the machine stitch that you will most commonly use. It is used for sewing seams, topstitching and understitching. Unless otherwise stated, we would recommend that you set your stitch length to 2.5mm (1⁄8 in). This gives a tidy, even stitch.

Zigzag stitch

Zigzag is a versatile stitch that it is used to neaten seams and edges. You can also use it as a decorative edge and to hold appliqué motifs in position. To neaten seams, we suggest setting your zigzag to 2mm (1⁄10 in) width and 2mm (1⁄10 in) length. For using on appliqué, we suggest setting your zigzag to 2mm (1⁄10 in) width and between 0.5mm–1mm (1⁄40–1⁄20 in) length.
