Caren dove into the crashing waves, going deep quickly to avoid the turbulence and debris that would batter her if she stayed close to the surface, close to shore. This was the darkest of dark nights she’d spent in her mer-form. No moon, the artificial lighting of the docks knocked out by the storm—the docks themselves splintered. At least she didn’t have to worry about a passing ship spotting her or a fisherman mistaking her for a big catch. With one flap of her tail, she descended swiftly and allowed herself to luxuriate in the freedom that she never felt on dry land. She called to her friends, as she thought them, the groupers she wanted so badly to help, but none called back. They were far out, no doubt, and she’d spend this short time alone with her thoughts.

The surf calmed a bit overhead, and she imagined they must be in the eye of the storm. No doubt Eric’s house and most of St. Andres would make out okay. She prayed so. He was a good man, humble despite his fame, generous with his fortune, and he deserved happiness. For a moment she let herself wonder what it might be like to be the girlfriend of such a man, so handsome, sexy and attentive. She’d never know. It had taken too long to get to the water, and by now, Eric Fisher would have read her note and written her off. It wouldn’t hurt him, and it shouldn’t hurt her, but she brushed at her eyes, as if her tears hadn’t been washed away already by the sea. Mom told me there’d be times like these.
