Chapter 17

Will’s texts are on my mind all day at school. I play with the idea of bumming a charger off someone, but I’d rather read them at home, alone. So I just wait.

As soon as I’m home, I run to my room and plug in my phone. After what seems like forever, it finally powers up. And there they are. Twenty-four texts from Will Fitz. Sent yesterday. He must have wondered why I never answered. I sit on my bed and click them open.

I’m not texting to beg you to be my girlfriend again. So you don’t have to worry about that. But you said a lot of stuff on Saturday, and I have to tell you my side.

I said those things about your family, and you got all mad, and maybe you should have. But Carol and Lynn get pretty crazy, especially Carol. They’ve been at some parties you haven’t been at. They’re all over the guys, any guy. Even me sometimes. It’s too much. You and Jane are cool. But your sisters are out of control. That’s all I meant.

And Jeremiah is pretty out there. Even you have to admit that.

So it’d be hard pushing them into my group. That’s all I’m saying. But I didn’t say it right or whatever.

Also, sometimes you act like you think you’re better than my friends. Whatever. I thought it was kinda hot that you really don’t care what other people think. But some of my friends don’t like it. So that would be weird too if you were my girlfriend. But now I get it that I’m one of those people you think you’re better than. And I get why people don’t like it.

I did send Teo away from Jane. Teo is always messed up over some girl, and it’d be worse with Jane. He’s crazy about her, and she would break him. You’ve got to see it’s suspicious. He likes her forever and she’s not into him, but now suddenly Cherry’s talking about Project Prom. Everyone knows it’s this big thing where you and Jane and Cherry are supposed to find dates. Well, not you, I guess because you don’t care. But Jane does, and suddenly she’s into Teo just in time for her senior prom?

But it’s not just that. I watched her with him. She looked like she was being nice to him but not like she was that into him, definitely not crazy about him like he is about her. Teo was always thinking of spending a couple of weeks in Argentina to visit family—I just convinced him to stay longer. He almost changed his mind and didn’t go at all because of Jane. It would have been stupid to give it all up for a girl who isn’t that into him. You say she is, and she’s your sister, so maybe I’m wrong here. But I wasn’t being a jerk, Bennet. She’s had like five years to decide she likes him.

Now George. I can’t believe you said no to me for him.
