In chapter 8 Paul has urged those with knowledge about idols to think of the common good and give greater value to love. In chapter 9 he reinforced this exhortation by showing how he himself sacrifices his rights for the good of others. Now he will bring out the big guns: Scripture, God’s Word, as the ultimate argument. He will go to the central act of God in the history of Israel, the exodus, and show that the Corinthians are on the brink of falling into the same sin of presumption as their spiritual ancestors, who, after being delivered from slavery and fed miraculously in the desert, perished without reaching the promised land because they indulged in idolatry. The Corinthians are facing the same kind of challenge now: to cling to the one sacrifice of Christ celebrated in the Eucharist, which is incompatible with even feigning idolatry.
