Thinking and acting like this is the only way I know to find your way through the wild new world of the twenty-first century. Whether navigating across the Pacific or through the chaos of modern civilization, wayfinders use the same process described by Nainoa: dropping into calm (Wordlessness), realizing that they have already found the destination in the Everywhen (Oneness). Then they feel their way toward the physical destination they have Imagined. As they do so, literally everything begins guiding them with moments of validation and illumination, like the beam of light warming Nainoa’s shoulder. To onlookers, it seems that the wayfinder is magnetically pulling in what she has envisioned; as Davis writes, “The metaphor is that the Hokule’a never moves. It simply waits, the axis mundi [center axis] of the world, as the islands rise out of the sea to greet her.”
