5 LEARNING GOD’S ECONOMICS

Even though we were broke and I was still in college, Tracy and I felt like God was telling us to build a house. We had no idea how that could ever happen.

“God, we don’t have any money and don’t have enough income coming in each month to pay a house payment,” we said. “Don’t You understand how this works? It doesn’t make sense for us to try to build a house right now.”

Yet we both felt God saying, “Yeah, but I’m telling you to do this anyway.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture had a mortgage program for rural development that was available in Midlothian, about ten miles from campus. They even subsidized the mortgage payment. We filled out an application and were a little more optimistic because, even though we didn’t have much income, we had no debt. And hey, I had a great credit score, remember?

The process was long, and we went through almost a year of praying and waiting before they ever contacted us. When we went in for a personal interview and the loan officer looked at our application, he started laughing right in front of us.

He looked at our total income, which was basically nothing, then looked up and asked, “Is this a joke?”

He had a dip of snuff under his front lip and reached for a little cup to spit into.

“No sir,” I said. “This isn’t a joke.”

“What are you thinking, applying for this?” he said.

“We honestly believe this is what God told us to do,” I explained, “and we’re just trying to be faithful to the process.”

“Okay,” he said, “I can tell you that this isn’t going to happen. There is no way I’m approving this loan.”

“What do we have to do to appeal this decision?” I asked.

“Well, you submit your appeal to me, and I don’t see that happening.”

He went ahead and told us the process and gave us the papers we needed to file an appeal. On the way out of the office, his assistant told us to keep in touch with her if we thought she could help us in any way.

The appeal had to be decided in sixty days or we would have to start the process over from the beginning, so we submitted our paperwork right away. Then we waited. We didn’t hear anything back after a few weeks, so we tried to schedule an appointment. However, the man making the decision would never put us back on his calendar.

Then, literally the day of the deadline, I called again. His assistant answered and said, “What can I do for you today?”

I said, “We really need to get on his calendar because our time is up tomorrow.”

“Consider it done,” she said. “You can come in tomorrow.”

We walked in the next day, and he put down his little spit cup and said, “Let me tell you, I don’t know why we’re doing this. The numbers don’t make sense whatsoever. But I have decided to give you a loan for a house.
