They reached the lake about an hour before sunset. Jenna was panting from the uphill climb. Her hair was plastered to her forehead and the back of her t-shirt, under her backpack, clung to her back. She took it off with a huge sigh of relief and let the breeze coming off the lake cool her body. The sinking sun sent long, nearly horizontal rays of peach- and brandy-colored light across the surface of the lake. The air still held a fair amount of warmth—or maybe it was her sweat making her radiate heat.
As she’d hurtled up the trail—at least that was how it felt to her—she’d done a lot of thinking. And she’d decided the whole “preserve the friendship” vow needed a big fat footnote. If she and Kit could resume their friendship so easily after the Mall of America disaster, they could survive a little sex. Or a lot of sex. Really, having sex would be the ultimate test of their friendship. And she, for one, had complete faith in it.
But how was she going to convince Kit of that?
Working quickly, they set up the three-person tent Kit had brought. It was disappointingly spacious, with plenty of room for two people in two separate sleeping bags to never even have to touch. At this rate they’d be stuck in the friend zone the whole trip. She had to do something. She had to shift things away from friendship to something more.
She walked to the edge of the small lake. It was ringed with pine trees that looked like ladies in long, graceful skirts. Here and there, a slender white birch offered a splash of relief from the shadowy dark green. The water, gilded by sunset light, lapped gently against the flat rocks of the shoreline. It gave her an idea.
“I’ve been thinking, Kit. It’s not fair that you lost a piece of clothing on this trip and I didn’t. We need to keep things equal in this friendship.”
“What do you mean?”
“The bracelet. If I was wearing a bracelet, I’d take it off so we’d be even. I guess I’d better take something else off instead.” With a quick breath for courage, she whipped off her t-shirt, leaving only her bra.
After a moment of paralysis, during which she died a thousand deaths, he gave a slow grin and walked toward her. Her ploy had worked!
“So you’re saying that, out of fairness, if I lose a piece of clothing, you’ll try to keep up?” He’d taken off his hoodie on the trail, but now he pulled his white t-shirt over his head. At the sight of his rippling torso, her eyes widened. Each muscle looked as if it was carved out of rock. His definition was incredible.
“What the hell, Kit? Is all that from carrying a chainsaw?”
“We have to be in great shape.” He shrugged, making his shoulder muscles flex and her mouth dry up. “This is me at the end of the season. And I’m one up, so whip it off.
