Be on the lookout for these sure signs that he’s a marriage-minded man and not simply a playa. Remember, you don’t want a player, you want a stayer. Even if he’s not particularly floating your boat, qualify him as a good option for one of your friends. You can either pay it forward or get a referral from him for his handsome friends.

QUINTON THE QUALIFIER: He knows exactly what he wants, and he wants it yesterday. If you don’t fit his ideal, he won’t waste your time, he’ll quickly move on. He’ll ask you all the qualifying questions in the first few weeks, or days, of knowing him. “Do you want children?” “How do you feel about settling down?” “Do you want to work or stay at home and raise kids?” “If my job took me to Alaska, would you be willing to move?” Those are all the questions you were going to ask him, and it’s fair to turn them around and ask him the same things. It might feel like “21 Questions” and you could get exhausted from the process, but fear not, this is a seriously marriage-minded man, and if you make the cut, he could be your husband by Valentine’s Day. He’s ready to settle down and he doesn’t want to waste any time. This man is on a marriage mission. You might be tempted to tell him what you think he wants to hear because he seems like such a sincere guy and you don’t want to lose him by giving him any “wrong” answers. But it’s very important that you be 100 percent honest with him. He’s qualifying you, just as you’re qualifying him. Better not to waste each other’s time if your life goals don’t mesh.

CARL THE CONSISTENT: If you find a guy who calls when he says he will and takes you out on a regular basis, I don’t care if he’s a three-eyed dwarf, nab him! He’s going to make a great husband. He’s probably successful in his job because he is a hard worker and always does what he says he’ll do. He’ll make you feel great during courtship, because no week will go by without a special date, no day will go by without a phone call, even if he’s not a talker, he’ll just want to check in. He’ll plan trips and weekend getaways for you well in advance. If he’s a twenty-something, he’s the consummate texter. He likes to know where you are at all times. Give him a chance, even if he doesn’t make your toes curl in the beginning. A guy like this will grow on you.

FINN THE FINE DINER: The man who sees that you’re well fed is a generous man who will nurture you and be proud of it. Even if he cooks for you at home and doesn’t take you out to the fanciest restaurants, he’s still showing that he’s interested in your physical well-being and ready to take responsibility for it.
