Chapter Nine

“I‘m excited!” I refrained from jumping up and down and contained my enthusiasm to a little drum on the table. We just finished configuring the computers to our preferred set up and were ready to test our headsets.

“Me too. Let’s kick some ass,” Todd agreed. He ran his hand through his blond hair before putting the headset on. “Can you all hear me?”

“Roger,” Hector said.

Martin’s voice sounded in my ears. “Loud and clear.”

“Yes, all good,” I confirmed, admiring the crisp sound of the headphones. The event was sponsored by a couple of great brands and rivalled the set-up we had in Dragon Soul.

“Ready to warm up?” Todd asked.

“Yeah.” I checked my inventory again and did a quick count of all my potions and boosts. There were strict rules on the competition on how much gear we could bring and disobedience would result in immediate disqualification. I didn’t want to accidentally screw my mates over so I just did a double take. Potions for health and mana, runes for casting spells, and my trusted fire staff.

We wouldn’t know what kind of enemies we were going up against, so we needed to be prepared for everything. Best case scenario, we fought creatures with a weakness against fire. Worst case, all the creatures would be fire-resilient.

In a tournament, it seemed unlikely that there wouldn’t be a mix of different types, but the balance was never completely fair. There was always one class or combination that had the advantage. We just had to hope we weren’t too disadvantaged.

“Should I bring a magic shield on top of my regular one?” Todd asked.

“Depends. I can cast a protective spell that lowers magic damage to fifteen percent, but there’s a cooldown of thirty seconds. How’s everyone’s gear?”

“I got my breastplate of Chaos,” Hector said. “Great for ranged and close-up attacks, but not against magic.”

From the corners of my eye, I saw Todd nod. “Okay, if there are loads of mage types and spell-casters, I’ll tank.”

“Okay, then I’ll keep my breastplate. It has flames on it.”

I chuckled to myself. Even if this particular piece of armour had awful stats, he’d still want to wear it just for the flames.

“Ready to teleport to the practice realm?” Martin asked.

“Ready.” I used the exclusive rune that was designed especially for this tournament and it opened a portal to a practice realm. It would give us the first introduction to some of the monsters and creatures we’d encounter while not actually consuming our potions and boosts.

My avatar disappeared into the realm and the screen changed. Green became red, trees became flames. The blue sky lost its colour and grey clouds rendered in.

“It’s a lava realm!” I noted.

Martin’s avatar appeared next to mine and immediately set off an effect. His presence always gave me a health boost, even if my HP was completely full. One of the perks of his staff.

He ran a couple of circles around me and took his usual position in front of me. An uncommon tactic, but since I was a girl with a staff, most people assumed I was the healer of the squad.
