Eva needn’t have worried about being torn from her granddaughter. Bob’s message — that the surgery was going to take quite a bit longer — brought the weight of the world back onto Joseph’s shoulders. After washing and gowning up again, he went back into the NICU and relayed the message to Eva. The news left her as stricken as her husband.

As he looked at Eva and the baby, Joseph thought of all the photos he was missing, photos capturing the first hours of Anna’s life. Instead of framing shots with his old, trusted Olympus, he was pacing nervously, unable to sit in the rocker a nurse had kindly brought over. Eva suggested he head down to the cafeteria to keep Bob company. He agreed, relieved to have something to do.

He joined his friend just as Bob was finishing his lemon meringue pie and coffee. Bob made the suggestion that Joseph get some food to go before the cafeteria closed for the night. Joseph dutifully followed the advice, getting some sandwiches in case he or Eva regained their appetites. By eight, he decided it was time to take care of Bob, convincing him to go home and get some rest so that at least one of them would be fit for work at the lab in the morning.

After retrieving their overnight bag from the car, Bob bade Eva and Joseph good night. It was nearly nine when he exited the parking garage. The car thermometer registered zero degrees. Heading for the FDR Drive, he could see the brightly lit disaster site in the distance. As he entered the highway and accelerated, he felt as though he was escaping the grip of a calamity. Soon he would be home, back within the fold of his comfortable, everyday life. He hoped that in time, his friends would be so lucky.
