EIGHT

Tanner shifted position for the fortieth time and tried to return to the legal thriller he’d downloaded on his phone. He’d been sitting in the lobby of the Atlanta City Detention Center since four. Now it was almost six.

The last two days, he’d made enough calls to the storage facility that he could now hear fatigue in the receptionist’s voice. He’d gotten the name and contact information of the prior administrative person. Then he’d called back to ask if they tracked the gate codes that were entered. They did, which helped narrow down how much surveillance video they’d have to look at. When he asked if he could view the footage, the woman told him Atlanta PD had already requested it.

He’d also been in touch with the detective assigned to the case and talked him into trying to get the prints expedited. Shortly after three, he’d gotten the news he’d been waiting for. And now Paige was free. Or she would be once the jail finished the last of the red tape.

Finally, the door into the waiting area swung open and a woman stepped through. After a quick glance, he averted his gaze. She looked rough, with one eye swollen shut, her lower lip split and puffy, and her skin a patchwork of yellow, blue and purple.

Wait. Those jeans and tank.

He shot to his feet. A lump formed in his throat, and her name came out as a strangled yelp. When he wrapped her in his arms, she stiffened and groaned.

He released her and stepped back. “What happened?”

“Some of the inmates decided to use me as a punching bag.”

“When?”

“Yesterday. Lunchtime. They didn’t like my tattoo. Actually, the tattoo was okay. They didn’t like the fact that I was having it removed. A corrections officer broke it up.”

As he led her to the door, his stomach churned. She’d needed him, and he hadn’t been there. He’d failed. Again.

The door swung shut behind them, and she continued, “I spent the rest of yesterday and most of today in the infirmary. Then they came and got me and said I was being released.”

“I wish I could have made it happen sooner.” Like before lunchtime yesterday.

“Since there hasn’t been time for a bond hearing, I’m assuming the charges have been dropped.”

“It took some finagling, but it’s done.”

“Thank the Lord.”

Thank the Lord? He’d worked his tail off the past two days. The Lord didn’t have a whole lot to do with it.

Paige tossed a bag into the truck and climbed in. “Mandy’s wig and sunglasses.”

“I’ll get them back to her.”

She cast him a sideways glance under one puffy eyelid. “Okay, tell me how you did it. The evidence against me was pretty convincing.”

“The first thing I did was push to get the prints expedited. While I was waiting on those, I called the storage place. Before Saturday, the last time someone used the code was two and a half weeks ago. The video surveillance shows Tommy with the duffel. Before that, they caught him on camera several times moving electronics in and out.
