Planting Pollinator Gardens
Pollinator gardens are wonderful ways for kids to learn about ecological concepts such as habitat, life cycle, and conservation, and the creation of a pollinator garden is a tangible way to provide nectar, pollen, and habitat to the many creatures that make plant reproduction possible! Pollinators not only include well known honey bees and butterflies, but also countless native bees, moths, hummingbirds, wasps, ants, bats, and more. We can encourage the proliferation of these species by planting gardens with their food and home needs in mind.
When planning your pollinator garden, remember that organic growing practices are recommended; pesticides should be avoided, as many are hazardous for pollinators. An ideal pollinator garden has a mix of native and non-native species, with blooms ranging from early spring through fall. You may want to consult with your local extension service or department of conservation to see which native pollinator attractors they recommend planting.
