Chapter Five

A week of viewing footage of a boring-as-hell bank left Dalton itching for action. He’d worked other cases in the off-hours. Sex with the gorgeous Alyssa helped a lot, but he hated feeling useless. TR had got the extension for evidence investigation but nothing had turned up yet.

Sure, some bank tellers took home pens or other office supplies. Some got numbers from customers but asking someone out wasn’t a crime. Dalton was focused on Mr. Moffet and the two tellers he’d gotten close to but he took in everything just in case.

When Moffet was off-screen, Dalton’s mind wandered a bit. He looked over at Alyssa, focused and biting her pretty lower lip. She was business suit girl again today and he loved it. All the more fun to take it off of her tonight. He was done debating. He knew he loved her and wasn’t going to give her up. The sole pressure of being a husband wasn’t for him but he wanted to stick with this group. TR was still anxious but Dalton had faith once it wasn’t so foreign but their normal, it’d all be perfect for all of them.

They were alone in the spare office. “So TR hasn’t freaked out yet,” he said.

“Freaked out?” she asked without moving her eyes off the screen.

“About the trio thing. He’s the most traditional, I’d say. Unless it’s bugging you.” Dalton knew Alyssa wanted to talk about it but TR had always been touchy about bringing up his marriage. They didn’t want to spook the divorced guy.

“It’s not bugging me. At first I thought it might be just sex, which could hurt working together and the friendship. Seems like things are working on a deeper level, though.” She hit the button to pause the video on her laptop and shrugged. “You seem really comfortable with it.”

“I’ve been with two girls at once. It was fun but that couldn’t last. Keeping one woman happy has never been my strength. Two, forget it. I go on stakeouts and take pictures of people doing stuff for evidence. Lots of women don’t like that in a boyfriend.” Dalton laughed. “You understand my job.”

“I do. Finding out the truth isn’t seedy or being a tattletale. The truth is just that—the truth. It’s important. If someone is cheating, the other person deserves to know. Just like if someone is embezzling money or hiding assets, people deserve to know. Our jobs matter and sometimes they suck up time and energy. I wish I could find the jewels or fraud here, but so far nothing. I have to be methodical and detached. TR works and stresses far too much. At least we all sympathize with each other’s careers.” She smiled.

“You’re worried it’s going to fall apart,” he said.

She sighed. “I want it to succeed—too much, maybe. I don’t know if it’s fair to you guys.”

“Don’t worry about me. I’m not traditional material. This is something that might actually work for me as a relationship.” He winked at her.

“TR’s been married, though.
