Confronting Taken-for-Granted Ways of Thinking and Doing that Limit Change

The fifth chapter examines how preparing and developing public sector leaders to use the thinking tool of critical analysis through postgraduate research, may be important. It is developed from a conference paper given at the American Educational Research Association as part of a British Educational Leadership, Management Administration and Leadershp Symposium (Taysum, 2008). The reason for this is that individuals may begin to question their ‘gut reactions’ and find them wanting. Stopping and thinking about assumptions or in other words confronting the ways of doing things that have been part of a person’s life for a long time may be challenging, and uncomfortable. However, this process is important because it helps a leader get to know themselves better so that they can understand why they think and do things in the ways they do. This helps leaders to recognize alternative ways of thinking and doing that has the potential to reveal obstacles, thus enabling leaders to dislodge themselves from deterministic life paths or trajectories. Evidence provided by cases are offered, that shed light on ways in which the academy supports the development of critical analysis with professional educationalists or groups of professional educationalists, to support ‘peer-assisted learning’. This may occur through organized postgraduate research or through In Service Education for Teachers (INSET).
