Here’s an example of changing the character of the border in a simple way: leaving off Rnds 4–6 of Border #61 changes the edging from wide and solid to more delicate and lacy.

■ Base rnd, each side: Multiple of 2 + 1 + corners.

Begin 2 sts to left of corner st.

■ Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), *skip 1 st, [dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] to corner st, [dc, (ch 1, dc) two times] in corner st, ch 1; rep from * around, join with slip st to third ch of ch-4. Fasten off.

Note: In Rnd 2, keep the ch-1s from Rnd 1 to the front when working all dcs.

■ Rnd 2: Standing sc in first dc, *[keeping ch-1 to the front throughout, dc in next st 2 rnds below, sc in next dc] to space before corner st, dc in next corner st in rnd below, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner dc, dc in same corner st in rnd below, sc in next dc; rep from * around, omitting last sc, join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.

■ Rnd 3: Standing dc in first sc, *[ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next sc] to corner space, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in corner space, ch 1, dc in next sc; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.
