Chapter 28
Molly applied the last of the topical antiseptic to the scar on her face. It would always be there, of course, but she knew if she kept applying the ointment, it might not be the most blaring feature of all.
Perhaps I should think about seeing a plastic surgeon in Fort Myers. See if he thinks surgery would improve the appearance of the scar. Maybe Iâll do that.
But something kept her from acting on that thought. Removing the scar, that is. The scar marked an event she could never forget. And it changed her outlook on life. Patrick had once referred to it as her âbadge of courage,â and had remarked on more than one occasion that âthe scar does not detract from your beauty, Molly. A scar is only skin deep. Your beauty goes much deeper than that.â As always, thinking about Patrick brought confusion to Mollyâs usually ordered mind.
Heâs thousands of miles away and I rather doubt he thinks of Cayo Canna and his friends here. But he did bring such life and exuberance to this place. This island. Was that because he was a priest? Or was it just who he is? Just Patrick. Whatever. Heâs not here and I am.
She was relieved Papa had gone to Baltimore and removed her belongings from her apartment. Now I donât have to return to that place. That place where my life was almost taken from me. That place where my world changed forever. And now that chapter of my life is truly over. Cayo Canna is my home now.
She sat there another moment, then heard Papaâs voice calling from the great room, âMolly Mac! We need to get on about going through these clues and photos you collected.â
âComing, Papa,â she replied and joined him. Knowing he was giving this situation his attention eased Mollyâs apprehensions about the whole ordeal. She tried to not think about this event as being a crime, but no matter how hard she tried, her brain kept telling her it was. After all, it didnât make any sense to believe that an intelligent womanâas that writer must have beenâwould crawl under a dock during the night and go to sleep!
âAlright, then. Tell me about these clues. What do make of them?â Papa asked as he chewed on his unlit pipe.
âI donât know what to make of them, Papa. Here. Look at this. A bit of paper was at the edge of the dock. Itâs sort of heavyâmaybe like stationery? There are a couple of letters on there, but none that I can decipher. Maybe this one is the letter a? Or maybe c? And, look here. Drawings of leaves in the upper left corner.â
âUhm . . . somehow that looks familiar. Canât recall where I might have seen it, though. What else?â
Molly picked up the next item. âThis is interesting. A rhinestone hairclip. It was in the sand next to the body. Somehow it looked a little out of place with her other adornments. An expensive pearl necklace and matching earrings.
