Épernay, France

PRESENT DAY

Yelena sat in her lab, but between her mind in turmoil, and the thundering in her chest, she couldn’t focus on her work. There had to be another explanation. Distracted, Yelena saw the ink she had smeared across the page. She picked up the entire notebook and hurled it across the room, the legal pads’s pathetic smack her frustration’s only result.

Raising her hands, she buried her face into her palms, but this only made her heartbeat louder.

Vampires have no heartbeats, Antoine had told her the night of her transformation. You’ll become accustomed to silence, in time.

Now she longed for the blessing she had once cursed.

“What is happening?” she half-screeched, half-sobbed.

“You have found your destiny,” a deep voice answered.

Yelena whirled, twisting to find Antoine.

“How did you get in here?” Yelena demanded. “I locked the door.”

“I bought the lab, remember? The doors, too.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I wish to introduce you to someone.”

“Who?”

Glancing toward the stairwell, Antoine said, “Come upstairs, and I’ll explain.”

Reluctantly, Yelena rose from the chair and walked toward the coven leader, who proceeded to lead her up the wooden steps. When they reached the top, a woman awaited.

“Yelena,” Antoine began, “this is Julia. Have the two of you ever met?”

Studying the tall blonde, Yelena shook her head. “I don’t believe so.”

“I did not think you had. Julia hails from the Isle of Skye, though has more recently sworn fidelity to our sister London Clan.”

“Charmed.” Julia flashed a smile.

“I’d like to say the same,” Yelena answered, “though I’ve no idea why you are here.”

“Completely understand,” Julia stated. “I was visiting Renée. I believe you know her?”

“Yes.”

“When Suzette explained what had happened, Antoine thought we should have a wee chat about it.”

“Regarding what?” Yelena didn’t try to hide her annoyance.

“The fact your heart is beating.”

“None of your concern.”

“Mine does as well, lass.”

Yelena stared blankly. “But you’re a vampire…aren’t you?”

“A pureblood from the Isle of Skye, Scotland.”

“Then how?”

“My mate’s name is Rónán. The first time we made love, my heart started to beat.”

“Such is not—”

“On my honor. Listen, and you’ll hear it for yourself.”

Yelena listened carefully, but shook her head because all she heard was the beat of her own heart.

“Here.” Julia stepped forward and grasped Yelena’s hand, moving it to her lower arm. “You’re a doctor.”

Pressing her fingers into Julia’s wrist, Yelena waited, then detected it. The pulse of moving blood through dead vampire flesh.

“Finding one’s mate is a rare occurrence. Many vampires pass through hundreds of lifetimes and never find theirs. But ye have.”

“Julia,” Yelena whispered, recalling her earlier conversation with Suzette. “You’re her…aunt? You sound…”

“Scottish, yes. I was married into the Black family for a time. An undesired, arranged marriage. Took me centuries to find the man to whom my heart truly belonged. I ken it’s taken Suzette centuries as well.”

“I…” Yelena shook her head. “This is a lot to take in.”

“I ken how you might feel this way, but I beg of you to at least give her a chance. To lose a destined mate has driven many vampires to madness.
