Hormonal Side-Effects of Our Estrogenic Exposures

Now, it’s time to talk about a hot topic phenomenon scientists refer to as “feminization of males”. This issue is related to our heavy estrogenic exposures and our testosterone declines and is a serious concern.

As exclusive as “feminization of males” sounds, women are not sidelined here. Estrogen—remember—acts both on the testes and on the ovaries.

What that means is the sexual issues arising from estrogenic exposures are first and foremost “hormonal” rather than merely “male” or “female”. The sex problems emerge because they mess with everyone’s hormone levels. And estrogenics seem to have unique but, nevertheless, equally problematic hormonal effects on both men and women. To illustrate this, let’s begin with young girls and puberty.

Ominously, the onset of puberty in our society has been shifting. On average, puberty today is coming-on far earlier than ever before in documented history15 and, by far, this is more extreme in girls than boys.16

Puberty that arrives years before normal is unusually and unnaturally stressful for a girl. It is a major psychological adjustment, for instance, when older boys or men start pursuing younger and younger girls. Early puberty is also a stressor for parents.

Next, there are the concomitant health problems arising from early puberty in girls. Like a thing called “hyperandrogenism”, which essentially is an excess of male hormone in a female’s body. “Andro-” is simply the Greek word for male. This surplus of male hormones in girls due to early-onset puberty is a well-documented side-effect.

Hyperandrogenism brings up a related side point. Artificial estrogens interact in various ways with the estrogen receptor. Scientists have terms for these interactions, like “agonist” and “partial agonist” and “antagonist”, but what you must know is that these interactions can be complicated. Not only are the direct estrogen receptor disruptions variable in unhealthy ways, estrogenics can even interact in more than one way with our testosterone regulating abilities. To add even more complexity, other hormones can be impacted by estrogenics, too.17 18
