CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Li helped me sit down, on a thick red decorative sitting pillow that was placed just in front of the knee-high table. Once I was seated, my eyes wandered over the variety of dishes and side dishes were on the table. All of it smelled delicious. Most of it I had never seen or smelled before.

My mouth was watering from all the delicious smells. Li was sitting across from me, now. He was staring at me with amusement. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. Not quite a smile. Not quite a smirk.

“Allow me,” he said. Then he filled up a small plate with food. I never took my eyes off of him or the food. I watched anxiously. My anticipation of eating made my stomach double up in hunger knots. When was the last time I had eaten?

Li set the plate down in front of me.

“Thank you,” I whispered. My words weren’t meant to be a whisper, but that’s how they came out. Soft. No. Dainty. My words came out dainty.

“You’re welcome.” He smiled then began to hand me a set of chopsticks. Halfway across the table, he stopped and withdrew his hand and the chopsticks. “Have you used chopsticks before?”

“Um...” In Hearth, we had always used forks, knives, and spoons. Chopsticks were more a Yamato regional eating utensil. I had a set of jade chopsticks in my armoire at the castle, but I had never used them.

“Ah. I see.” There was that amusing tone in his voice again.

“Surely, there are things you can’t do,” I asked with an eyebrow raised. “Or is the all mighty Elder Li perfect in every sense?” His shoulders tensed and he looked at me.

“Perfect?” He asked leaning on the table with his elbows. His sleeves slid down to the crook of his elbows. “Do you see me as perfect?”

His hazel eyes were staring a hole in me. There was nowhere for me to run. Nowhere for me to hide. Even if there was a place to run and hide, I doubt I could get there on my own. My body was barely functioning after my days’ worth of slumber.

“What do you call this?” I asked pointing at what looked to be red pepper seasoned noodles. Li leaned over to see where my finger was pointing.

“Ah. That?” I looked at him and nodded.

“We call that... hm... how do they say it where you’re from?” He tapped his finger on his chin several times. “Ah. I know what you call it.”

“What’s that?”

“Avoiding the question,” he leaned back away from the table and snickered. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing. I hadn’t expected him to reply with that. I thought he would give me the real name of the noodles. But he had a point, I had attempted to avoid his question about him being perfect. He already knew the answer. There wasn’t a point in me answering.

“Elder Li, I think the men of Hearth have influenced too much of your sense of humor.
