Harvest & Celebration

Both spring and fall are seasons of transition, marking shifts between light and darkness, warmth and cold. Fall, in particular, can often be a challenging season for many people, myself included, as it signals the end of the light and warmth of summer and heralds the coming of the frosty winter months. The falling leaves, beautiful though they are in their glorious bright colors, seem a little melancholy as they remind us of things passing and time moving on.

Of course, fall is also a time of harvest and abundance as we gather the fruits of the earth for the darker days ahead with hope and gratitude. Celebration and thanksgiving are also part of this vibrant season, as are the ways in which we remember those who have gone before us on this life journey that we share.

Perhaps, though, the greatest gift of fall is to remind us, in the most natural and beautiful way, that life moves on through cycles and changes, both on this earth and in ourselves. We are no longer the same as we were a few days, months, years ago. And we are not the same as we will be in the future. Just like a leaf or seed pod or ripening fruit, we are designed and destined for change, and fall gently prepares us to accept and let go, like a russet-gold leaf dropping from the branch, so that we can be ready for new blessings and growth.

In this change and transition we can be helped on every level—physical, emotional, and spiritual—by plants, herbs, spices, and other green gifts; we can nourish ourselves both on the inward and outward plane to truly harvest the abundance contained within our soul and spirit.
