A horse that automatically speeds up into a hard, true pace, has a little excess slack in his ligament system, the opposite problem of the horse that hard trots. The solution is to tighten the ligament system just a little bit, but not so much that the horse starts to fox trot. You can help your horse make these adjustments by riding him in footing that changes the way he uses his back and changing the way he uses his head and neck and his back muscles.

Using Terrain

Horses are more inclined to do a hard pace going downhill on hard surfaces. To help your horse use his body differently, try asking him to speed up his gait only on flat ground or on a slight uphill grade. Practice asking for speed going up the grade, then walking slowly back down again. Ride him on soft grass or dirt, not on pavement or hard packed gravel, when you ask for the stepping pace. To help him use his legs and back better, you can also set out poles in a pattern of two, then one, then two, and practice riding over them at the stepping pace. Your horse may hard trot or fox trot over the poles, but he will most likely do a stepping pace and not a hard pace between them.
