The only available wartime portrait of Yosif Pilyushin

Disregarding the danger to his life in every battle, under artillery and machine-gun fire, he went into the front line in order to hunt for and exterminate the Germans. After being gravely wounded and disabled (he lost his right eye and was wounded by shell fragment in the legs on 21 January 1942) comrade Pilyushin, motivated by hatred of the fascists, returned to his unit and continued to take revenge on the aggressors. As a sniper he killed 55 fascists, and as a sniping instructor he trained 380 snipers. He now serves in a divisional training company and continues to pass on his knowledge and experience. For bravery and heroism shown in the fight against the German invaders and his self-sacrificing labour in training snipers, comrade Pilyushin deserves to be decorated with the Order of the Red Star.'
