In the exhibition catalogue for The Vast and Beautiful Interior, Salmon said that Museum Ship, Penticton BC (1959) was done “at closer range than his usual vast Interior panoramas.” She continued: “In this study, with surprising details of human activity, Hughes acknowledges the reality of the commercial tourist trade with characteristic honesty. From the line of rental row boats he leads the viewer indirectly to the old sternwheeler, S.S. Sicamous, by then a museum.”

When Hughes was preparing for his Kamloops exhibition in 1994, he decided to take up the SS Sicamous as a subject again, this time painting it with his highly resolved watercolour technique. Pat Salmon photographed the artist holding the finished painting outside his home on Heather Street in Duncan, where he had moved in 1977.
