Jacques Chirac: “He’s courageous and likable. On a human level, he’s perhaps the best of the lot. But there’s something irrational about him. Within him. That’s why he worries so many Frenchmen.”

Lionel Jospin:4 “What an uptight man! For someone as rigid as he is, he manages to do very well for himself. He’s angry with me, but I really like him.”

I recalled something that Mitterrand had said about Charles Pasqua, the controversial minister of the interior, some time back. “He’s a very solid guy, much steadier on his feet than the other politicians. When he lies, he looks you straight in the eye, and it’s you who tremble inside, knowing full well he’s lying to you.” He said that not with disapproval but with admiration, as though he was talking about another side of himself.

As the waiter served dessert, an apple tart Tatin-style, the president seemed self-absorbed, as he always did at the end of a meal, and began to concentrate on what I call the tooth ritual: he sucked, scratched, and dug with a noise level that would have done credit to a major construction site.

After dessert was over, he went into high dental gear: with a toothpick as tool, he attacked the back molars as well as the old, worn-down canines.

It was painful to behold, watching him there at table with his forefinger probing the inner depths of his mouth. But he hadn’t lost his sense of humor. Realizing the spectacle he was making of himself, he shook his head and said, “Can’t help it. With me, it’s like a profession.”
