Hannah

The blonde gave up any attempt at conversation after Hannah started crying again. He sat silently against the wall and checked his phone every ten minutes or so.

At one point, he grabbed the convenience store bag and began rifling through its contents.

He glanced up to see her interested eyes, “Are you hungry?”

Having not found her voice yet, Hannah nodded and eyed the items he pulled out of the bag and displayed on the side of the tub.

Lined up from left to right was a honey bun, jerky stick, bag of chips, and granola bar. She chose the granola bar and relished in its almonds and chocolate chunks as she chewed her first bite.

The blonde opted for the honey bun, tearing open the crinkly plastic and taking a large mouthful.

“How old are you?”

He eyed her suspiciously before swallowing. After a moment, he said, “Is this for your report against me when you escape?”

“No, I’m just curious. You both seem too young to do this kind of thing. What are you? Eighteen, nineteen?”

“Nineteen. Would you like my full name, social security number, and phone number as well?”

Hannah accepted another bite of the granola bar and rolled her eyes at him.

“Did you just roll your eyes at me?”

He looked both amused and surprised by her sass. She swallowed the last of her granola bar, “Yes, I did. You don’t have to be sarcastic.”

“And you don’t have to be so nosy. I know what you’re doing, so stop.”

“Fine. How about a question for a question? I’ll answer your questions if you answer mine.”

Hannah held her breath as he contemplated her proposal. Maybe if she could catch him off guard, she could get information out of him.

“Alright. But I can choose whatever questions I don’t want to answer.”

“Okay. Same goes for me.”

The blonde threw their wrappers into the waste bin next to the sink and maneuvered his body to face her directly. His full attention was on her now, “Shoot.”

“Me first? Oh, no. How will I ever think of a question to ask you?”

The blonde chuckled and watched her with eyes alive with humor, “You’re right. Sarcasm isn’t necessary.”

“What’s your name?”

He shook his head, “Really? You know I’m not going to answer that!”

“Not even your first name? What am I supposed to call you then? I know your brother’s name is Kane. I’ve heard you say it so that’s what I’ve been calling him in my head.”

The surprise in his expression was short-lived as he realized the times he’d let it slip in her earshot, “So what have you been calling me?”

Hannah shrugged, “The blonde.”

“We’re both blonde.”

“Your brother’s hair is darker. A dishwater blonde. But yours is golden with lighter strands running through it.”

His eyes danced as she described the color of his hair in detail. When she felt the rush of blood running to her cheeks, she looked down and readjusted her position in the tub.

“It’s still your turn. Choose this question wisely or you’ll lose your chance.”

Hannah thought for a moment, “Favorite food.”

“Pizza. Yours?”

“Ice cream.
