This usually consists of a clapper/loader or two, focus puller, camera operator and ‘grips’ (the guy – often a weightlifter, ex-boxer or merchant seaman – who manhandles the camera around, (they can weigh a ton) and fits it on a crane, tripod, or Dolly, and operates that equipment accordingly). The D.P. is generally treated with extreme deference by his crew and is frequently addressed by his forename with the suffix of ‘Sir’, viz Cecil, Sir.

In the old days they used to live and die in dark homburg hats, camel hair coats, canary-coloured kid gloves, checked bow ties, cavalry twill trousers, and spats worn over brown suede shoes. One I knew even sported a shooting stick. Another wore a monocle fitted with blue glass, but that was back in the days of black and white. Now they mostly wear the obligatory jeans and baseball cap. They are lords of all they survey. One very fine cameraman – sorry, D.P. – of my acquaintance has trained his crew to be courtiers.
