Dear God in heaven, how am I going to get through this? Alexa glanced down at the vulgar white lace corset she wore over a short, nearly transparent chemise that barely covered her bottom. Her breasts were pushed up, exposing the top half of her nipples, which had been lightly rouged pink. She cringed to remember the way Madame had touched her there, applying the color with trembling hands, licking her thick lips as she did so.

Alexa had put on the garments herself, knowing she would be forcibly dressed if she refused. Madame had laced up the corset while Alexa drew on sheer white stockings and the white satin garters with their tiny pink roses. Madame had brushed her hair but left it loose and flowing down her back, then the woman had tied a pink satin ribbon around her throat.

Alexa had not cried. Not this time. Not tonight.

She had cried every day until this one. She had begged and pleaded and taken several beatings with a willow switch. Madame had warned her the beatings would get worse, that the blackamoor would surely take his belt to her if she continued to disobey. She said that the man would enjoy it, and Alexa believed her. She had seen his lascivious smiles, seen the lewd way he fondled the women. There was no end to the man's demented cravings—no escape from this madhouse that was meant to be her home.

And no mercy from its inhabitants, who all believed she should simply accept her fate.

Perhaps she had, she thought, as she stood at the top of the stairs looking down at the crowd below her, at the drunken officers of Napoleon's army, the foul-mouthed merchants, and gouty, overindulged members of the "new nobility."

Perhaps she had, for she felt nothing but numbness and resignation. Nothing in the space that had once been her soul.

Madame stood beside her, bent and kissed her cheek, then gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

"Do not fear, ma belle. I will pick a man worthy of your charms for your first night here. He will have to pay the price, of course, but I will make certain he initiates you properly into the world of demimonde."

Alexa bit her lip. In the salon at the bottom of the stairs, the men crowded closer, leering up at them, pointing and making bawdy jests. They mingled with a dozen half-dressed women, speaking to them crudely and squeezing their naked breasts.

"I—I cannot do this," Alexa said, a surge of spirit returning, a last brief flash of the woman she had left behind. "Please, madame, I beg you to let me go."

Celeste slapped her face. "You will do it. You will do exactly as I say. You will lie beneath whatever man I tell you to and you will let him have his way."

Alexa made a whimpering sound in her throat. Her cheek stung and her knees had begun to shake.

Celeste Dumaine merely smiled. "That is better, my dove. Now you will follow me down the stairs.
