2.7.2 Criticism

In addition to numerous publications that highlight lean management, its industry‐specific variations, and their positive effects, as well as countless companies that emulate the example of Toyota Motor Corporation in their search for greater efficiency, there is equally extensive, and in some cases justified, criticism of the topic of lean.

‘Lean Management is a method that the Europeans use because the Americans think that the Japanese use it successfully’ is the somewhat deliberately ironic statement that H.J. Klepzig (2018) prefaces in Lean Management in Practice.

Klepzig cites the following specific criticisms of lean, which can also be found in other critical sources on the subject:

Lean is not a self‐contained strategy but rather a “toolbox”.

Various requirements of lean would be in contradiction to traditional, Western corporate management and would therefore tend to be unsuitable, or at least difficult to implement, e.g.: ○ The call for continuous improvement would not correspond to the Western way of thinking we are familiar with.

○ Avoidance of waste is not automatically equivalent to (more) value creation.

○ Numerous lean tools promote inflexibility through rigid requirements, which limit the company's ability to respond to the market and are therefore counterproductive.

○ The Western production philosophy often contradicts the requirements of lean in various areas (e.g. layout) and can therefore only be implemented with difficulty or inadequately.
