And in the blink of an eye, he rocketed into the sky, leaving Patricia alone on the rooftop, her hair blown back by the sudden gust of air left in his wake. Her mind screamed at her legs to move and soon she was racing down the steps, her heart leaping out of her chest.

Charlie was completely drunk, unable to form words, or even sit up straight. Henry and Simon were trying to catch up to him, sucking down their beer like it was the only thing keeping them alive. The coffee table was covered in empty bottles. The TV was muted, yet still displaying the twenty-four hour news coverage. The three friends were trying to make sense of the night, but their conversation kept going in circles.

“He's doing the right thing,” Henry said. “Looking at the world as a whole and seeing the global issues. It's the next logical step, right? Saving one, or two, or even a hundred people is fine, but he has the ability to start making huge changes. He can have an impact on the world that truly changes things.”

Charlie mumbled something as he fumbled with the gold cross on his necklace, but Henry and Simon ignored him.

“It's not that I disagree with him,” Simon said. “I just wish he wasn't doing this alone. It scares me that he's taking on so much responsibility. It's cliché to say that he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, but it's sort of fitting in this situation. Even though he's stepping back and trying to look at things on a bigger scale, he's still blaming himself if even one person dies.”

Simon chugged the last quarter of beer in his bottle and set it down. He talked as he made his way into the kitchen. “Unless, of course, that person dying is one of us. It sounds like he's done caring about that.”

“You know that's not what he meant,” Henry said.

“He was pretty blunt about it.”

“I think he didn't have time to be flowery about it. It's not like he doesn't care if we live or die.”

“Fine,” Simon said. “But he's my friend, and I don't want him to do this alone. I wish he would trust us enough to let us help him make decisions.”

“He's not alone,” Henry said. “He has the thoughts of everyone in the world to guide him. He can look at what we want and what we need in a way that no one else can.”

Simon smiled and said, “That's hard for me to even fathom, much less understand. He has to have the most incredible algorithm working in his brain in order to process all that information. I mean, I get what you're saying. I'm just not sure one man should be making the kinds of decisions he's talking about. Stopping bank robbers is one thing, but... I mean, we don't even know what he's going to do. We said he shouldn't join the military, but what if he decides to get involved in wars? That could get messy.
