It took half an hour to pack and get a taxi to Darrick's apartment. Perry had asked the receptionist to give Tristram his message in two hours, so that they were long gone by the time Tristram found out he was leaving.
Once they got there, they locked all the windows and doors, sat down with a coffee and traded secrets. Darrick talked about Pirro and their relationship, lamenting over the fact that he'd spent so much time with someone who didn't deserve him. In return, Perry told him the truth about his relationship with Cade, how it started and the mental confusion it caused, now that he wasn't here with him.
“Do you really think you could protect us, if something happened?” Darrick wondered, blowing on his coffee, as they stared at the TV.
For being a reporter, he'd skipped past the news channel and settled on switching the function to link with his laptop. When Perry thought he would start working, he'd surprised him and brought up an app that showed a crackling log fire. The sound effects and burned amber hues were making him feel tired, which was one feeling he wasn't going to fight. He'd had a hell of a week and all he really wanted was to snuggle up with Cade. Without him, it just wasn't the same.
“It worked with the Demon at the press conference. He was really freaking scary, so I figure it should work on anyone else.” He chuckled, thinking back to how terrified he'd been, when he thought that Demon was going to kill Linc. He had all the brawn and muscles that Cade had, but none of the sweetness or approachability.
But thinking about that other Demon, who was identical to Cade in his Demon body, made him miss his boyfriend. He didn't know where he was, what was holding him up and why he wasn't responding to any of Perry's attempts to get in touch with him.
Where are you? Perry asked again. You don't have to come home, if you can't or you're busy, but at least talk to me, he begged, rubbing his forehead as it started to pound. The longer Cade was out of touch, the more weak and tired he felt. His headache had been a dull ache all day long, never disappearing but not getting worse. Now, it seemed to throb and pulse.
“Perry!”
He blinked, as a hand waved in front of his face and he found Darrick leaning awfully close. The reporter looked worried, so he pre-empted his concern and forced a smile. “Sorry, I'm really tired. I think I'm just going to get some sleep. It's been a hell of a day,” he confessed to as much as he could, so that he didn't have to lie.
Darrick trusted him and they were all they had, right now, so he didn't want to start lying to him about something as important as how he felt.
He'd been there to see Darrick suffer Pirro's harsh words, rejecting him as a companion.
