Types of Cavities or Tooth Decay and More!
As earlier discussed in the previous chapter, cavities cannot be formed without the production of acid by plaque causing bacteria around your tooth in the presence of sugary food items to feed the bacteria. The truth is that teeth that are prone to decay or cavities will typically lack fluoride in the enamel, which fights plaque.
Yes, fluoride is known to have the ability to combat cavities or decay, though, it is not able to do much as soon as the decay process sets in thus, the daily use of tooth paste containing fluoride is very essential.
Basically, poor hygiene is a lifestyle that will enhance tartar and plaque to build up all over your tooth while accelerating the process of decay of the teeth.
Now, regardless of the fact that the human mouth contains loads of bacteria naturally, a single species is known to produce the acid that causes tooth decay or cavities. However, this varies from person to person as some have very active tooth decay process.
These types of persons can equally pass this to their offspring or friends effortlessly by drinking from the same cup, kissing or eating together. In other words, this condition is extremely contagious, so be careful not to make it a family affair if you already are experiencing tooth decay.
Yes, the truth is that, the progress of tooth decay is rather slow from the time the bacteria starts to produce the tooth dissolving acid to the time of the detection of the cavities or tooth decay.
However, once the decay has affected the second layer of the enamel, it will then begin to spread effortlessly at a terrific speed towards the pulp. Bear in mind that the vital part or area of the tooth, which houses the nerves and blood supply is known as the pulp.
Consequently, the pain will be excruciating since the decay will start to affect the nerves, which is an experience that you donât want to go through. So, visiting your dentist for regular checkup should not be something you want to shelf until you get to this stage.
The interesting thing is that cavities or decay can actually take between two to three years to really affect the enamel, however, once, it gets to the dentin, the decay can literally damage the pulp in less than a year!
So, the trick will be for it not to get to the dentin at all, why? Because once the dentin is destroyed, in a matter of weeks the remaining tooth structure can be totally wiped off! Yes, it is that serious.
However, the most avoidable type of tooth decay, referred to as smooth decay, equally progresses slowly. But its progress is slower and begins as a white spot in the tooth, where the enamel is dissolved by the acid producing bacteria. Yes, this type of decay is prevalent with persons within the age bracket of twenty to thirty years old.
Another type of decay is known as pit or fissure decay, which
