To avoid the pitfalls of selecting texts that are culturally neutral, LeMoine (1999) offers the following tips:

•Choose well-known authors, illustrators, publishers, and sellers who have already developed solid reputations for producing culturally appropriate materials.

•Critically analyze how the characters are portrayed in the story, how the facts are presented, and in what context they are presented.

•Evaluate factual information for accuracy.

•When applicable, analyze the author’s use of nonstandard language for authenticity and thoroughness.

•Carefully examine the illustrations for appeal, ethnic sensitivity, and authenticity.

The overall goal in the selection process is to find culturally responsive texts of all types that are consistent with the themes, the standards, and/or the content specific topics represented in the mainstream titles. I prescribe that there should be at least one reading or interaction with a piece of culturally responsive text to go along with every mainstream title, state standard, or topic covered in the course of a class. It is at times incumbent on the teacher to seek stories, poems, essays, articles, songs, or any text that the students can relate to culturally. The teacher should beware of two challenges they will encounter in meeting this requirement. One challenge is finding the time to search for supplemental texts. At first, it takes a great amount of time to seek out appropriate matches for novels, short stories, and other literature for units of study or themes in the various content areas. If feasible, this type of preparation is better done in the summer months. Finding appropriate resources is the second challenge. However, some help is available. Over the years, CLR educators from around the country have already done some of that necessary grunt work. I along with my colleagues, led by Dr. Letitia Davis, have put together a starter list of culturally responsive texts. In no way is this list exhaustive or meant to be complete. It is simply a nudge to begin the work of collecting titles with the trust that teachers will continue the process based on the particular needs of the students and their context. The list of Culturally Responsive Books can be found in the section titled Resources for Teachers (Appendix C).
