After quilting, I sewed the sections right sides together, layered the quilted top with the backing, and added enough quilting to hold the layers together. In this case, all I needed was to stitch-in-the-ditch.

Quilting-in-the-ditch through all the layers is enough for this small wall quilt.

Why It Works

Everything works together to achieve the desired overall effect of ripples pushing against each other, in motion even as the viewer looks at the quilt. The Japanese contemporary fabrics can lean toward the cute side, but the offset fussy cutting with the jostling curved lines to create the arcs gives this quilt a sophisticated look. Because the fabrics are grouped in the partial circles and arcs, the colors and values work together to let the viewer clearly see the pattern of the ripples.

The two color families, oranges and blues, and greens and violets, are almost opposites on the color wheel. This complementary (or double split-complementary, depending upon your interpretation) color scheme provides contrast and contributes to the illusion of the ripples pushing against each other. But I did not stick to rigid textbook definitions when choosing colors and fabrics. A lot of the colors are cousins from close color family relatives.

Repetition of the circular motif is everywhere in this composition: the five ripple patterns, the motifs in the fabrics, the quilting lines that echo the arcs, and so on.

The eye is drawn to the focal point—the largest partial circle just off-center and to the right. From there, the eye follows various ripples pushing against each other, back to the focal point. Around and around you go, finding something new to look at each time.
