The next morning, the omega wiped the sleep from his eyes as he stood in Russell’s kitchen nursing a cup of coffee. The sun shone through the windows and across the fox’s bright red hair, like fire. For once, Axel left the two of them alone while he went outside for a smoke.

“Sleep well?” Russell asked in a lazy drawl that dripped with sarcasm.

Ben knew he looked like shit. Dark bags lined his eyes, which were already puffy. His only consolation was that Axel, whose bruises were now yellowing, looked worse.

“The bed was comfortable, but I had a lot on my mind last night,” the omega said. The plate of eggs hardly tempted him, though he knew he should eat.

The fox winked. “If you needed help sleeping, I’m sure I could’ve offered some assistance.”

Ben smiled half-heartedly and changed the subject. “So do foxes mate like wolves?”

“We do, for the most part,” Russell said and bit a sausage in half.

“And you don’t have a mate?” Ben asked before he took a bite of his breakfast. His stomach growled, and the omega wished he could appreciate the food – and the hot as hell fox in front of him – without his heart feeling like it was going to collapse any moment.

Russell shook his head. “I did have a mate, actually. Long time ago, but he was too nervous about what the locals would think. Even with us living all the way out here, he didn’t want to give us a shot.”

Ben widened his eyes. “So your mate left? Just like that? Where’d he go? Wait, he’s not dead, is he?”

For the first time since they met, the smile slipped off the fox’s lips. “Not dead, least I don’t think so. He left and told me not to follow.”

The omega’s heart felt like it might beat out of his chest. “And you listened to him?” What kind of mate would do that?

Russell shrugged. “Did I have a choice? Leave my life and territory to chase down someone who doesn’t want me? No thanks. I’d rather find another mate, one that don’t mind what others think of us.”

Ben realized his mouth hung open, and he snapped it shut. “You can have more than one mate?”

The fox sighed heavily, and his eyes crinkled at the edge. “Humans get more than one chance at love, right? I thought Coop was my mate, but maybe I was wrong. If we were meant to be together, by destiny or whatever other forces rule the galaxy, it would’ve worked. He wouldn’t have run off into the night like a damn chicken. But he did, and it hurt like hell. I’m still alive though. I can still meet someone new and live a good life.”

Russell echoed pretty much everything Ben thought about leaving Axel. As soon as the omega was free of the taller wolf, Ben would also be free to pursue a mate that loved him back. But what about the ache in his chest? The
