Heritage Flag

More than just a symbol of Great Britain, the British flag (known as the Union Jack) is also a prominent image in popular culture—gracing everything from car seat covers to underwear. Although Christiana Coop appreciates the flag’s design, it also carries a strong sense of nostalgia for her. The Union Jack flag has been an icon in her family since before she was born, even adorning the top of her parents’ wedding cake.

Prior to moving to the United States in 1970, Christiana’s mother, Angela Coop, called Yorkshire in northern England her home. After she married and had two children, Jonathan and Christiana, the family visited England regularly. Christiana still holds many fond memories of those trips, including playing in the garden at her grandfather’s home in West Yorkshire, meeting her great aunts and uncles and hearing stories about her mother’s childhood, exploring castles along the Welsh coast, and a particularly special visit to London when she was eight that heightened her obsession with the royal family.

Though the trips became less frequent after her grandfather died in 2001, Christiana visited England in 2009, and was immediately flooded by warm recollections of her childhood visits there. When she returned home to San Francisco, she was inspired to make a large-scale interpretive version of the Union Jack flag out of remnant rolls of wallpaper. Hung on the wall above her bed, the flag—and England—are never far away.
