When was the last time you were so overjoyed that you found yourself singing, dancing, laughing, or crying?

King David knew a thing or two about dancing in worship before the Lord. In 2 Samuel 6, we read about Israel’s great celebration after recovering the ark of the covenant. The ark, which symbolized God’s special presence in the midst of His people, had been held in captivity by Israel’s enemies, the Philistines. Now they were bringing it back to Jerusalem and rejoicing over its repossession. They sang, danced, and played instruments of all kinds in their celebration. As David led the parade, he was “leaping and dancing before the LORD” (v. 16).

When we experience God’s love and mercy toward us in a meaningful way, when we focus on His faithfulness and kindness, we can’t help but celebrate and praise Him!

Of course, not everyone loves dancing, even when we’re at our most uninhibited and overjoyed. We don’t need to be talented dancers to worship the Lord. Just dance! But if you’re so uncoordinated or self-conscious that being forced to dance would steal your joy rather than express it, that’s okay too. God is honored by many different forms of rejoicing. In 2 Samuel 6 we see God’s people playing musical instruments, gathering together, offering sacrifices, wearing special clothing, dancing, shouting, and feasting—all as expressions of the joy they found in the Lord.
