Chinese caption reads, “Group photo was taken on April 25, 1939 at the spring baptism for newly baptized church members and their pastors of the Baptist Church of the Drum Tower Street of Kaifeng City.” On the back of the photo is written “Baptisms by Peter Li [Lee], 102 - Li, HMH, Mrs. HMH at right side.”

By then the Baptists owned multiple compounds in or near Kaifeng. There was the large Baptist compound within Kaifeng where a church and schools were located. Outside of the city, where the Gillespies lived, were two more Baptist compounds separated by a dirt road. The Lawtons with their young daughter lived in the same compound with the Gillespies. Across a dirt road was another compound in which the B. L. Nichols family lived with their two sons.
