20 . Ibid. Gallicanism held that state authority and national customs overrule the Catholic Church at many points. Ultramontanism emphasized the pope’s powers and prerogatives in civil government and temporal affairs.

21 . Ibid., 136. The view in question, that man has both a soul and a spirit, had long been held by esotericists of various kinds and by Christians of various persuasions. That it piques the interest of both is not surprising, for it has ramifications both theoretical and practical, metaphysical and devotional. It has been denied by many Catholics and Protestants alike, especially in the modern era, despite Biblical verses such as 1 Thessalonians 5:23, 1 Corinthians 15:44, Hebrews 4:12, and others. That Maistre held to it, indeed, that he had encountered it in the first place, testifies to his wide reading and reflection in both esoteric and theological literature. It is a theory often ignored by theologians of different stripes, be they conservative or liberal. It is frequently dismissed as of little importance even when recognized as a question demanding at least some attention. To the contrary, we believe it is of considerable importance.
