20In the context of Malay silk weavers, Mohamad (1996: 189) highlights the exploitation of women weavers by Chinese middlemen who pay them âvirtually nothingâ for their finished sarongs (kilt or skirts). The majority of the labour force in the industry, whether in the past or present, consists of women. Although they are real producers or actual weavers, they do not control the production process and the finished product. As home based workers they have no official identity and they are subjected to extremely low and unregulated wages (ibid.: 195). Unlike the case of the shahtoosh weavers, Venkatesan (2009) explains that the Labbai Muslim mat weavers in Tamil Nadu, own the final product. However, since they are dependent on traders to sell their products, they are exploited by these traders who find fault on the pretext of colour specifications, fineness of texture etc. Very often, in such cases, the traders either refuse to buy the product or pay them less.
