Dear Matt:

My mind tells me to ask you to do what your heart tells you to do. Maybe you’ve outgrown the mold that originally formed you. Maybe you are trying to fit new wine into old wineskins.

I do know that I don’t feel right about writing to Rome or Chicago. Why beg them to reconsider? You know who you are. They don’t. In your case, I’ve asked myself, What would Jesus do? I can’t see Jesus writing letters to Rome.

But every time I learn of another silencing, and now your recall, I want to weep. That authoritarian strain is straining the patience of hundreds of us—especially the females among us.

My faith is no longer dependent on the Roman Catholic Church for its strengthening; the Curia are destroying it. Instead, it is kept strong by the knowledge that only love is important, no matter where it is found. There seems very little of it to be found among authorities in our Church.
