“If we brought you these paintings, how can we be assured that something won’t happen to them?” I asked.

“Oh, we have an excellent security system,” Melanie assured us. “Everything is locked up tight, and since I’m the only one working here, there’s no confusion about the pieces.”

“What if—” I wasn’t sure how to bring up forgery, but she seemed pretty willing to talk, and so far hadn’t taken any offense. She was rapidly getting herself erased from my suspect list. “What if someone wanted to make a forgery of the piece? Could that happen while it was getting framed?”

Her expression completely changed. Uh-oh. I must have pushed too hard. But she didn’t look angry, she actually looked frightened. Was she afraid we’d found out her secret?

Then I realized that she wasn’t looking at Frank or me. She was staring out the big window. I whipped my head around to see what had her so scared.

And locked eyes with Kyle McMartin.
