Skirt Back and Front (make 2)
BOTTOM LAYER
** With size US 6 (4.0mm) needles and using a provisional cast on, CO 113 (120, 128) sts. Work in St st for 1" (3cm), ending with a WS row. Switch to size US 7 (4.5mm) needles.
NOTE
To work a provisional cast on, crochet a chain with scrap yarn several chains longer than the number of sts you will be casting on. Cut yarn and tie off crochet chain. Leaving a tail, knit the number of cast-on sts indicated in the patt through the back loops of the crochet chain.
TURNING ROW (RS): Purl.
Work in St st for 1" (3cm), ending with a WS row.
TURN HEM
Undo provisional cast on and place live sts on a smaller needle. Fold hem facing under along turning row. **
Join sts from 2 needles as foll: Knit 1st st from top needle and 1st st from bottom needle tog. Cont joining sts from both needles to the end of the row—113 (120, 128) sts.
Work even in St st until piece measures 5" (13cm) from turning row. Place sts on a holder.
TOP LAYER
Rep instructions for bottom layer from ** to **. Place bottom layer sts on a needle and place behind top layer. Join sts from 3 needles as foll: Knit 1st st from all 3 needles tog. Cont joining top layer, cast-on edge and bottom layer tog to the end of the row—113 (120, 128) sts.
Work even in St st for 3 rows, ending with a WS row.
DEC ROW (RS): K2, SSK, work to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2.
Working in St st, rep this dec row every 12th row 5 (4, 3) times, every 10th row 2 (2, 3) times, every 8th row 2 (3, 3) times, then every 6th row 2 (3, 4) times—89 (94, 100) sts.
Place sts on a holder.
SKIRT FRONT
Make same as skirt back.
WAISTBAND
Place 89 (94, 100) sts from front and 89 (94, 100) sts from back on a size US 7 (4.5mm) circular needle. Join for working in the rnd, placing a marker at the beg of the rnd—178 (188, 200) sts.
JOINING RND (BOTTOM EDGE OF WAISTBAND): Purl, dec 2 sts by p2tog where front and back meet at each side—176 (186, 198) sts.
Work even in St st for 2" (5cm), ending with a WS rnd.
TURNING RND: Purl.
Switch to size US 6 (4.0mm) needles. Work in St st for 2" (5cm).
BO loosely.
FINISHING
Join side seams of skirt front and back using mattress st. See the Glossary , for instructions on working in mattress st.
Turn waistband facing under at turning rnd. Stitch in place until 6" (15cm) rem open. Insert elastic through formed casing. Fit, cut and stitch ends of elastic. Finish stitching the waistband in place.
Weave in all ends.
Measure circumference of hems on bottom layer and top layer. Cut 2 ribbons to the measured lengths plus 1" (3cm). Sew seams in ribbons to form circles, leaving ½" (1cm) seam allowances. Wet ribbon and iron flat, ironing seams open. With sewing thread, whipstitch each circle of ribbon to the WS of bottom edge of each hem, creating ½" (1cm) reveal of ribbon below knit hems.
