George Meyers (left), Eugene Novak (center), and Frank Novak did not need large prizes or free gardens to pique their interest in gardening. These eager gardeners, pictured in 1938, were from Tod School located off Union Avenue on 65th Street.
This unidentified little girl looks very pleased with her garden. The home garden program was considered the gateway to a full tract garden program for school districts. It was easy to manage and inexpensive to run. In the beginning of the Cleveland program, teacher interest was the only prerequisite to form a home garden program.
